Canadian-born Florence Nightingale Graham took the business name of Elizabeth Arden and was a pioneer in the cosmetics field and is credited with developing the first “Beauty Cream”. After moving to New York she worked at a pharmaceutical company and learned about skincare. In 1909 after setting up a salon, she began experimenting with the medicines, salves and herbs she had used in her own kitchen with an eye to developing beauty treatments. After a stay in France where she learned beauty and facial massage techniques, she returned to New York and introduced modern eye makeup to North America. She sold her first products through her salon with its bright red-painted door that had become a symbol of renown and local prominence. Before long, Elizabeth Arden Salons were opening around the globe and her popular products were sought after by the most distinguished and respected international retailers. Today, Elizabeth Arden is the favourite upscale cosmetic brand to women all over the world.
